Volunteering at IDEC
The IDEC organizing committee is looking for volunteers to assist with this amazing event. The majority of volunteers are needed in the Event Week, Aug 11th to 18th. Other positions can begin as soon as they are filled.
Event Week Volunteer positions:
Shifts will be in flexible 4 hour blocks, depending on need and availability. Volunteers are welcome to take a single shift or the whole week.
Van drivers
Class 4 license needing. Driver will mainly go back and forth to the airport, and assist with outings during the week.
*Registration desk*
People skills required for this bounce around kind of Job. Receive
delegates, help people find their rooms, meeting spaces, etc. Confirm
registrations and take payments if delegates are not fully paid.
Registration Assistant
Receive delegates, help people find their rooms, meeting spaces, etc.
Assist with baggage and make trip to the airport to hold the "Welcome
to IDEC" sign.
Live Translator
Will assist delegates who do not speak fluent English, either by
helping them with specific words, of by doing Live-Translation for
speakers and workshops, sitting with them and speaking quietly over the
voice of a speaker. For large groups needing the same language, a
translator may end up translating a live feed from a both for for
headset users.
Common languages are most useful; German, Japanese, French, Spanish, Korean, Hindi, Mandarin.
Technician
Stage and production skills required: Audio, Video, Lighting and
Stage Management. Technicians will take responsibility for various
components of presentations, workshops, keynote speakers, and the
closing night Talent Show.
Conference Assistant
Will act as a general assistant to the organizing committee.
Maintaining signage, moving extra tables and chairs and setting up
rooms for certain events. Photocopying, office tasks, and phone calls
could also be part of this position.
Immediate Volunteer Positions:
Each of these positions can begin immediately and will become
busier as we near the conference. They can be shared between people,
taken on in part, etc.
Mail-out Postmaster
Will send snail-mail invitations to, and correspondence with, democratic schools listed on the Dem. Ed. directory.
Volunteer Coordinator
Will be responsible for assigning tasks to volunteers, receiving new
volunteers, recruiting some volunteers when supply is short. Could be
done totally by phone and/or email. No need to come to meetings, do it
on your own time line (but still quickly).
Event Week Volunteer Coordinator
Same as above, but this person will work during the event week and stay on the grounds full time.
Leaflet Producer
Will create a program that lists funders, participating groups/schools/organizations, supporters, etc.
Audio Visual Coordinator
Will organize the technical staff and ensure that Audio and Video needs are met for each presentation needing support.
Transport Coordinator
Will coordinate pick and drop of arriving delegates, Transport for
field trips and outings, and the return of delegates to the airport.
Translation Coordinator
This will involve gathering information from people about
translation they might need and how we can help them. It will be a
matter of checking registration forms and then talking to people about
their needs, then making some arrangement. Different kinds of
equipment might be used and coordinating with myself or Chris Bergman
for the gear and other tech support people that we recruit will be
needed.*
Translator
Help with Live translation during the conference, and/or with
translating text, mostly on the website. Common languages are most
useful; German, Japanese, French, Spanish, Korean, Hindi, Mandarin.
