Researching Free and Democratic Schools
Up to Schedule and Events
Hi All,
I am looking forward to IDEC, and to meeting other people who research free and democratic schools.
As a child I was a student of a publicly funded Canadian elementary free school. As an adult I have become/am becoming an academic who studies democratic and free schools. For my MA I did an ethnography of Windsor House, and now I'm embarking on a PhD on Canadian Free Schools, as well as helping to organize this conference.
I am looking forward to having some conversations with other folks who have/are/maybe studying free and/or democratic schools within a formal academic setting. Talking about: What kind of questions we are interested in; How we navigate the contradictions between the education places we're involved in; how we position ourselves within wider conversations; what motivates us; and other such things. At IDEC 2003 I met two other people in similar positions, who have since become great colleges of mine; I am looking forward to expanding this.
If this is you, let me know, and we can find some way(s) to exchange ideas and support each other. Perhaps we can collaboratively arrange a workshop on research on democratic schools at the conference
happy thoughts,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I am pleased to see the possibility for people like ourselves with similar interests. As you will see from my profile, I make my academic home in a Faculty of Education, but the faculty's identity is thoroughly bound up in the traditional structures and organizations of provincially-mandated schooling/schooled structures and experiences (for teachers and students).
i need to look into how and if I can attend this gathering in August. As it is, i will already be in Vancouver for the entire month of July, But I fear that my very sympathetic partner may grow a bit testy if I decide to stay away longer!
In any event, I would like to start with connecting with you in some on-line conversations - e-mail, perhaps. Perhaps we could even meet at CSSE at the end of May/beginning of June or at some point during July? I am trying to envision some research work around different aspects of democratic schools which might lend themselves to a more critical/deeper understanding of them as models of healthy learning organizations.
And, naturally, if there are others on this list, I would love to hear from you as well!
Sincerely,
Darren

Hi Darren,
Well, jolly good; I love finding people doing similar work. I'll indeed be at CSSE, and it would be great to meet up there. I'm presenting on Monday morning from my M.A. research on Windsor House Democratic School. Perhaps we can swap stories afterwards?
Happy thoughts,
