Community Sport participation

Posted by Tom Walker at June 22. 2008
Most people in Canada believe that sport has the potential for contributing to the development of well-rounded, healthy citizens. Yet the newspapers often reveal a different story. Just last week it was reported that the Manitoba lacrosse association banned parents from their childrens' games because of the uncontrolled threat of violence. At the community youth recreational level, competitive sport can be fraught with tension, conflict, unfairness, petty politics, unrealistic expectations, and sometimes even physical and psychological harm. Is there interest in exploring what can be done so that kids can experience teamwork, positive challenge, healthy growth and development, and, above all, have fun?
