1 Q: How can I become a part of IDEC/SANE?

A: Membership in SANE is open to the public and you can click here to visit the sane site and learn more.
A: You can register for IDEC 2008 here.  If you would like to get involved with the organizing committee please contact us.

2 Q: I have family in Vancouver or prefer a hotel.  Do I have to stay at the UBC dorm?
A: NO. You do not have to stay at the dorm, but we do recommend it because the majority of the workshops and presentations are being held within 5 minutes walk from the dorm buildings.  Many activities will occur spontaneously and being around the IDEC group will allow you to easily take part.
If you prefer to stay in a hotel, UBC accommodation services also runs a hotel in one of their buildings.  Please visit their site to learn more.  Their hotel building is about 15-20 minutes walk from our accommodation site.

3 Q: Who do I contact if I want to hold my own workshop/presentation?
A: Most of the IDEC Conference Calendar will be generated through our Open Space structure.  Anyone can suggest a topic they would like to present and the interest of the group will determine the way in which things happen.  You can visit the calendar page to read more, create a new workshop, or view new workshops in the Open Space Calendar
Note: you will need to create an account and log in before you add a workshop.

4 Q: How can I find out where the next IDEC location will be/how can I host an IDEC?
A: IDEC 2009 will be held in Korea.  The decision for IDEC 2010 will be made at IDEC 2008 and those interested in hosting are welcome to present their case to the General meeting.  It was agreed at IDEC 2004 that priority should be given to the part of the world that has not hosted an IDEC recently.  A system of "continent rotation" was agreed to be used when possible.  According to that rotation, Europe or Africa will be due a turn in 2010.

5 Q: If I'm not connected to a democratic school can I still attend IDEC?
A: YES.  IDEC registration is open to anyone.  We will have "public days" (Aug. 15-17th) with some activities geared toward a wider audience.  For the most part, IDEC will be geared toward people who have experience in Democratic and freedom-based learning environment, however, all are welcome.

6 Q: How can I find out more about democratic schools/schooling in my area?
A: Visit the Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) at www.educationrevolution.org.  Their site has a list of the Democratic schools known in the world.  Their book store carries the 'Directory of Democratic Education' as well.

7 Q: I am planning on attending with my family, will there be activities for children?
A: YES.  IDEC 2008 is not just for adults!  We will be running a democratic school or 'mini-Windsor House' during the conference.  We hope that many children of all ages will attend and create a rich, multi age environment for IDEC 2008.

8 Q: Will there be any free time during the conference to explore Vancouver?
A: The decision is up to you.  There may be a few open slots in the schedule but activities will likely be running 8am to 11pm.  The extent of your participation is up to you.  See 'Exploring UBC Campus' for ideas for activities outside the conference--many of which would be fantastic to explore as a group.

9 Q: Do I need to provide my own translator?
A: It is advised that you have your own translator, but if it is not possible, contact us and we will try to make arrangements.  We may be able to provide translation booths and radio receivers if there is enough demand.

10 Q: I have specific dietary needs.  Will the food be able to accommodate me?
YES. We will have a wide selection of food throughout the week, able to accommodate everyone's needs (i.e.. diabetic, vegetarian, allergies etc.). If you do have any serious allergies please let us know in advance on your registration.

11 Q: What is the weather expected in August? What type of clothing should I bring?
A: August is one of Vancouver's warmest months of the year. Bring a light waterproof jacket just in case of rain. For the evening a long pair of pants and a light sweater will do. For the day time, T-shirt, shorts, jeans or track pants will be fine.  Day time temperatures will be 10-30 and 5-20 at night.  It is usually dry but could rain the whole week.  Additionally, UBC campus is surrounded by ocean, and has a few accessible beaches good for swimming and sunbathing.

12 Q: Can I bring an instrument and toys?
A: YES! It would be great to have people bring instruments and anything else they would like to play with (Frisbee, cards, games, toys, etc.  You won't need a lot, but a few things to share with other are always fun.

13 Q: How can I get email updates?
A: Add your name to the mailing list on the newsletter page.  Whatever news we have will be sent to that list.

14 Q: Is financial aid available for IDEC 2008?
A: Maybe.  It depends on our ability to find funding.  The best way to ensure your trip to IDEC is to start planning now and fund raise in your own community.  If you wish to apply for a subsidy, see our subsidy page.

If the answer to your question is not on this page, please contact us.
