Open Space

by Jim Carrico last modified 2008-08-05 12:33

Have an idea for a workshop, presentation or panel discussion at IDEC? Click on the "add workshop" button in the toolbar above to begin. (You'll have to create an account and log in first.) Anyone is welcome to present at IDEC. However, we do not guarantee a space or audience. IDEC is an open conference that welcomes all participants to contribute in any way they like, so long as it does not prevent others from doing the same. All items on the Open Space calendar will be scheduled if there is an interest from participants to attend. Rooms will be allocated according to greatest need. Any items that do not make it onto the schedule can still happen, because the people wishing to offer them can make them happen. If we run out of rooms, people will present outside, in their dorm rooms, or in public spaces.
  • Bike Mechanic Class (WH-Live): The U.B.C. Bike Co-op will host a bike repair workshop on getting your bike on the road. (UBC Bike Co-op, David Gagnon, Sarah Mills)
  • FREE THE CHILDREN: BEING REAL: There are actions we can take, all by ourselves, in all relationships, especially with children, that do not require anything from anyone else. These actions are simple, immediate and inspiring. As we find the voice of the peacemaker, leader and elder within ourselves, we witness the change we want to see in the world, the children and all relationships. This can be scary, fun, often chaotic and always freeing. We will practice hearing behind the words, seeing through the eyes of others (especially children) so relationship connection can happen. We might even identify the background beliefs we carry that often drive our actions without awareness. And release them. Or more simply, believe everything. (BRUCE SCOTT)
  • Alternative in Public - MCG Youth: Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is a learner centered art program for public school students in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. (Dror Yaron)

I would also like to examine the link between `education' and `a peaceful society' - are we more peaceful and harmonious individuals having grown up in a non-coercive educational environment? Come share your experience and views in an informal discussion. (Divya Jaishree Sellamuthu)
  • The Hallway Project - Bringing Democracy into public schools: A movement towards democracy must be accessible to all people. Melia Dicker hopes to convince them that it's never too late to give yourself the education you never had. This school year, she'll return to her childhood classrooms in California and travel around the world pursuing learning and happiness. She will document the project through an online journal (www.reschoolyourself.com) and film. Come discuss how Reschool Yourself can reach the greatest number of other adults and inspire them to re-educate themselves intentionally. (Melia Dicker)
