IDEC 2008 will take place at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, Aug. 11th to 18th 2008. We are hoping for the participation of 300+ delegates from Democratic Schools and other learner-centred communities around the world.

Location:

Surrounded by forest and beaches, UBC is a great location to host an IDEC.  Public buses run 6am to 1am and UBC is just 20-30 minutes drive or bus from downtown Vancouver or from the airport (YVR).

Accommodation:

UBC is providing us with dorm rooms for delegates.  Most of these rooms have one single bed and a small percentage have two.  There are rooms with special facilities for those with disabilities.  All dorm buildings contain floor lounges with small fridges, sinks and sitting areas.  Bathrooms are shared among floors or in room 'pods'.

Transportation:

UBC is a 30 minute bus ride or drive from Vancouver International Airport (code YVR).  We will arrange pick up if possible or provide clear directions.  For those who are uncomfortable finding their way, require special assistance, or are travelling with small children or heavy equipment, we will ensure a comfortable trip from the airport.

Goals for the 2008 IDEC:
  • Consider the many implications of democratic schooling regarding attitudes that support sustainability.
  • Foster dialogues across locations, experiences, and approaches within democratic schooling.
  • Raise awareness of ecologically sound practices, and make them an integral part of the conference.
  • Incorporate a profoundly interactive, flexible, and exciting democratic program for young people as a central part of the conference; this will be modeled on Windsor House and organized and run by alumni and students.
  • Network and strategize internationally regarding issues facing democratic schooling including the benefits and dangers of public funding.
  • Provide a forum to discuss models of how to raise our children given the many crises we face in the world.
  • Conduct a conference as carbon neutral and as environmentally friendly as possible.
  • Facilitate workshops and events that enrich schools and help them grow in strength.
  • Help people experience the cultures of other democratic schools around the world.
  • Generate and increase interest in democratic education in our region and internationally.
  • Raise the profile of SANE both within our region and internationally.
  • Have a great deal of fun, meet new people, increase allies, and inspire creative strategies for our futures.
